Launch of IPMA’s new data repository

Ocean research and monitoring have just received a significant boost with the launch of the WEAREATLANTIC digital platform on July 30, 2024. Developed as part of the "Atlantic Observatory - Data and Monitoring Infrastructure" project and funded by the EEA-Grants program, this innovative tool aims to transform the way oceanographic data are accessed and used in Portugal. The platform includes marine data regarding physical and chemical parameters (e.g. temperature, ocean currents’ speed) and biological data (e.g. phytoplankton, bivalve molluscs).
The WEAREATLANTIC platform was created to centralize and make available marine data from the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and other entities operating in the Atlantic Ocean basin. In order to guarantee the integrity, maintenance and sharing of data, the platform follows the FAIR Principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and adopts the best practices of the European Union, complying with the INSPIRE Directive.
What makes WEAREATLANTIC truly innovative is its ability to promote the efficient use of marine data, bridging the gap between oceanographic equipments and the end users. This platform adds value to ocean observation data for scientific, technological and social purposes, and promotes interactions and synergies between relevant blue economy stakeholders.
The WEAREATLANTIC platform can be defined by three components:
(1) Data Protocols - which allows the upload of data into a repository (database);
(2) Metadata Catalogue - which allows users to locate and obtain information about the data, through a structured and easy-to-navigate system;
(3) Data viewers and sharing - public access for data analysis and download, through a user-friendly interface that allows the sharing of data from the marine environment.
